Ligne Verte (Green Line)

At first sight you see a wall-painting and hear sounds of building engines far away but still present.

This fresco represents a kind of Mediterranean landscape. Then you slowly discover the painting and its principal characters: the cactus, the cypress tree and the olive tree.

You don't really pay attention, but some small stones fall on the ground at a moment and then you'll discover that a branch of the olive tree was growing inside the wall. And now it's the whole painting that turns to life. The plants destroy the 'security fence' and part of it falls to the ground.
This 'trompe l'oeil' painting actually represents the landscape behind the wall. A wall recently built in Jerusalem…

biography

Laurent Mareschal studied at the Beaux Arts in Paris and then Le Fresnoy, studio national des arts contemporains. Since 2003 he has received several grants, been involved in many art projects and made two videos: Ligne verte (2005) and Wallajeh (2007), the first of which won festival prizes at Madrid (Spain), Porto (Portugal), Ste Anastasie and Clermont-Ferrand, and was selected at over 100 festivals and exhibitions worldwide.
